Nikita Popugaev is a really intriguing prospect. He started the year on fire putting up 51 points in only 40 games with Moose Jaw (good for 7th in the league in scoring at the time) and then was traded to Prince George where his point totals plummeted. This guy is a mountain of a man and there are maybe a few question marks about his skating, (I personally don’t think it’s that bad, he gets around) but what surprises me most is his playmaking ability. A very underrated playmaker, he can find teammates in seams and through traffic. He has above average offensive awareness which makes me like him quite a bit. He isn’t a physically dominant player though and I think that’s unlikely to change but he’ll take his man out of the play when needed.

Overall this player is a bit of a risk but if you have a deep team, you can try and swing for the fences with a pick like this. It was difficult for me to come up with a comparable for this player as there just aren’t very many 6’6″ playmakers in the NHL but the closest I could come up with is a playmaking version of Michael McCarron.

Pretty much a boom or bust type of prospect.
