I have watched Maxime Comtois for a long time and this is one guy where I guess I just don’t get it. I mean, I can see that he’s a really good skater and his overall game is fine but to me, nothing that would justify a 1st or 2nd round selection. For me, his overall play in no way matches up with the enormous opportunities he’s had to showcase himself at every level. At the U18 tournament in 2016, I didn’t think he looked great but he was an under-aged player so he wasn’t supposed to necessarily stand-out, though it’s nice when it does happen.

At this year’s U18 tournament, he certainly wasn’t the only player on Team Canada to disappoint but I thought he had a poor tournament. He was put in a great situation, playing with solid players and I just didn’t see much out of him apart from a lot of frustration.

My comparable for Comtois is Magnus Paajarvi as he was also a highly touted prospect for a really long time only to have his draft stock fall his draft year. MPS dropped to 10th overall and managed to salvage his NHL career by adapting his play as a role player. I saw lack of finish offensively back in 2009 with Paajarvi and I think that Comtois is similar in that regard as well. With that in mind, I can see Comtois as a player who drops on draft day…I don’t think I’m the only one who sees him this way. I’m ranking him as a third round pick but I think that he probably won’t drop that far and someone will take him in the 2nd round.

Definitely not my kind of player…he could surprise but I doubt it.
