COMPARABLE : Ryan Murphy
UPSIDE : Bottom Pairing Puck Moving D-Man
FLOOR : AHL Call-up

I had the opportunity to see Ian Mitchell play for Team Canada at the U18 tournament and I came away with a mixed bag. He is a really good skater and an excellent puckmover and both those qualities make him a real interesting prospect. However, I feel that he has below average defensive awareness and that’s something that will definitely hold him back at the next level unless it improves.

He is slated for the University of Denver in the fall, so he’s going to have time to work on his game. He’s likely going to be there for 3 years and then possibly another couple in the AHL before he’s ready, if he shores up his defensive game. My comparable is Ryan Murphy and although he didn’t follow the same path, I think the same kind of issues have held him back after being a high first round pick.

I think this could be a good gamble in the 4th round.
