Nico Hischier Scouting Report:

This is my scouting report on Halifax Mooseheads center Nico Hischier. The comparable that I heard for Nico Hischier is Henrik Zetterberg and I think it’s a really good one. Hischier has everything you’d want in a hockey player: he’s highly skilled, has great vision and imagination, is a great skater, he’s tenacious, he’s defensively responsible. He definitely has some ‘Datsyuk’ to his game (his favourite player growing up) and you can see that he makes that second effort to strip opposing players of the puck… he’s quite good at that as well.

While Hischier might not have what some would consider ‘ideal size’ for a Top Center, he’s going to fill-out and probably play at close to 195-200lbs, so for me there is no concern there. I actually believe that Hischier doesn’t get the credit that he deserves after being ranked as a late first round pick back in September and really coming into his own this season. The performance he gave at the WJC was completely mind-blowing… well at least for me. For a draft eligible player, in what is widely considered a 19 year old’s tournament, to put a team on his back like he did and get that Swiss team to as close as they got, was simply incredible. For me, that puts him ahead of Nolan Patrick in this year’s draft.

I don’t really think you can go wrong selecting Hischier…he’s a great team player, a hard worker, leads by example, is captain material. What’s not to like? I see Hischier’s floor as a #2 two-way center but if I had to guess with this player’s compete, he won’t be satisfied with that and will keep working until he’s the best player on the team.
