Ryan Poehling Scouting Report:

This is my scouting report on St-Cloud State center Ryan Poehling. I really didn’t know what to expect when I got my first look at Poehling but I just kept getting that feeling that I had seen this guy play before and it took a good 4-5 games until I realized that I was looking at a Colin Wilson CLONE. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because Colin Wilson is a solid NHLer but if you’re picking really high in this year’s draft, I feel like there are probably some better options with better overall potential.

Poehling has the ideal size, skating ability and two-way play that you need as an NHL center. I think where he comes up a bit short, at least in my view is on the playmaking and creativity part of the game. He’s really a north-south type of player and will go into the dirty areas to score. For this reason, I think Colin Wilson is the perfect comparable as he was ranked very high during his draft year, drafted very high (7th overall in 2008) and probably has never really lived up to that billing but has still had a pretty good NHL career thus far.

I will say one thing, I believe Poehling’s floor is pretty high, so for him to make it to the NHL in some capacity is a really good bet. I think any team selecting anywhere from #20 to #35 would be getting good value but any higher than that and I think it could be a reach.

A solid, safe pick to add two-way ability to the depth of an organization.
