Spencer Knight Scouting Report

Potential:

  • Upside: Franchise Goaltender
  • Floor: Starting Goaltender
  • Comparable: Carey Price

Scouting Report:

This is my scouting report on U.S. NTDP goaltender Spencer Knight. I know what people are going to say: “A goalie 4th overall? Are you crazy? Goalies are a crapshoot at best; no team is going to spend a Top-5 pick on a guy that could end up the next Jack Campbell!!!” I get where people are coming from and you’ll never get any argument from me that goalies are a different animal when it comes to scouting and player evaluation. All I can tell you is that I’ve been doing this since 2007 and Spencer Knight is the best goaltending prospect I have seen in 12 years. That might change again next year but we’ll see.

In the end, I’d be surprised if Knight was a Top-5 pick but I believe that Top-10 isn’t out of the question. Goaltending isn’t a need for most teams unless you don’t have a good one… then it’s a glaring issue and one that can sometimes take several seasons to resolve. That’s why Knight should be such a highly sought after commodity on June 21st.

From my view, after the top-3 guys there is no other player in this draft that could be a franchise changer the way that Spencer Knight has the potential to be. When you think of really great teams that have been held back for years because they didn’t have an answer in net; doesn’t it stand to reason that some team decides to take a plunge and draft a guy that could potentially solve that issue for the next 10-12 years? Those keeping a close eye on the draft scene know that he’s been coming for at least 2 years and whenever I’ve seen him play, he’s always calm, and he’s always either been really good or simply great.

Summary:

Knight has fantastic, fluid lateral movement and outstanding quickness with his pads. He has the ideal size and demeanor for a goaltender – he gives off a type of “I’ve got this” aura. He makes difficult saves look routine and is rarely out of position; always square to the shooter. Has excellent anticipation and reads the play quite well which gives him a big advantage when facing shooters. He is very strong against breakaways/shootouts and he’s a very good puck handler which is a huge asset.

Comparable:

In terms of size, demeanor and lateral movement Spencer Knight reminds me a ton of Carey Price. That’s not to say that he’ll be as good but I don’t think it’s impossible either. In the end, I believe that Spencer Knight has the potential to become a franchise goaltender and that’s the reason why he’s so high on my list.
