COMPARABLE : Calvin de Haan
UPSIDE : #4 Defensive D-Man
FLOOR : #6 Defensive D-Man

I’ve watched Markus Phillips play for a long time and while there is nothing that he does that will ever really make you get out of your chair (good or bad), I see that as a positive because it means he’s doing his job. He’s a very consistent player who you can count on as a dependable part of your defensive corps. He’s a good skater, makes a good first pass, has a good stick and will take the body but isn’t overly physical. He can move the puck very well and plays a very solid defensive game. He’s almost “Vlasic-like” in how steady and dependable he is but I think that comparison is a stretch.

My comparable for him is Calvin de Haan and I think that’s fitting for the type of player Markus Phillips can possibly become someday. I think the team that’s selecting him will be getting an NHL player but he probably tops out as a #4 middle pairing guy but if not, there’s a very strong chance he’ll end up a Top-6 player. I think we’re looking at a very safe pick and he will probably be selected in the second round.
