COMPARABLE : Antoine Roussel
UPSIDE : 3rd Line Checking Winger
FLOOR : 4th Line Checking Winger
Alex Formenton is a gritty two-way player with blazing speed and in my mind, probably the best forechecker in this draft. He is a high energy player with good defensive awareness that seems to enjoy going out there and hitting everyone and just generally being a player that is hard to play against. He’s also got some skill and can certainly help out and provide some scoring depth.
I don’t quite see Top-6 upside at the NHL level but I think he’s a pretty safe bet to become a solid NHL player for a lot of years. At almost 6’2” and only 165lbs …just wait until he fills out…he’s going to be even more effective.
My comparable for him is Antoine Roussel also a player that other teams hate to play against…I see him ending up like that. I think that because of his speed and willingness to engage physically that his chances at being an NHLer are excellent. For a team that is looking to increase their grit, I think this is a pretty safe pick.
