COMPARABLE : Carl Hagelin
UPSIDE : Top-6 Offensive Forward
FLOOR : KHL Regular

Kirill Slepets is an undersized forward who plays an all-around game. He has good vision, a nose for the net, good offensive awareness and he’s a quick & slippery player. He’s also a very good skater and a diligent forechecker & a hard worker. I like all of those things about Slepets but here is the problem, I’m not 100% convinced he can be a top-6 forward at the NHL level and there just aren’t very many 3rd+4th line Russian forwards in the league. Those players tend to prefer to stay ‘home’ and play in the KHL and be ‘stars’ for more money rather than play a secondary role in the NHL.

Still, I think there is value in taking a late round flyer on one of these guys and holding on to their rights. Letting them develop overseas and possibly bringing them over at age 22-23 could be a shrewd move if they turn out better than expected. My comparable for him Carl Hagelin because I think Slepets is in that mold. Hagelin has played on several different teams and adapted his game in order to stay in the NHL…if Slepets is going to have a long NHL career; I believe he’d need to do the same.
