I like what I saw from Rickard Hugg at the U18 tournament. Sweden’s captain played an important role on that club, playing in all situations. Hugg is a player who is easy to like. He has good compete and he’s a battler. He’ll give that second effort that’s required to check his man or steal the puck. He’s also an underrated playmaker and he knows how to get into the right areas to score or set someone up.

I really like his all-around game…he has good offensive and defensive awareness. He’s not the greatest skater but with some work it can improve, I don’t think it will hold him back. My comparable for him would have been John Madden (Center – New Jersey – for those who remember that guy, who for a while was one of the best 3rd line centers in the league) but that’s a ways away so my comparable for him is Tomas Plekanec. I see Hugg turning out a little bit like that. I’m not convinced that his offense is going to translate but I do think he can chip-in and help and he’s got a very good two-way game.

I think he’s probably a little bit underrated but he’s one of my favourites and he’s got a chance at ending up as a good 3rd line center.
