I got the opportunity to see Ostap Safin play at the U18 tournament this year. He is a huge winger with ideal size and he plays more of a skill game. He is more of a North-South type of player. He has good top-end speed though I think he could stand to improve his first few steps/acceleration. I see some immaturity to his game as I saw him often get rid of the puck too easily and attempt low-percentage passes that immediately lead to turnovers. Could be a just a few bad games or it could be that ‘this is who he is’. For me, what concerns me most about him is that he didn’t really seem engaged unless the puck was on his stick…which isn’t really what you want to see.

I could see some teams trying to get the jump on this type of player early making a projection of what he could become but I am not really convinced, all I see when I see him play is a Joe Colborne type. Still, if you’re in the mid-to-late 3rd round, that’s probably good value at that point.
