Ondrej Machala is one of my favourite prospects in this year’s draft and I know and understand full well that he is likely to be a late round selection. I think anyone that has watched this kid skate and give it his all, whether that’s with Team Czech Republic at the U18 tournament or with the Niagara Ice Dogs, would have a tough time not liking him.
He’s an excellent skater and a fantastic forechecker. He’s got a fair bit of skill and talent as well. He had a modest first season in North America playing for Niagara but I believe bigger and better things await him starting next year as he gets more comfortable. My comparable for him is Tobias Rieder who ended up a 4th round pick of the Edmonton Oilers (I had him ranked 19th on my list in 2011) and I think Machala could surprise and become a solid player, much like Rieder has done.
