Alex Newhook Scouting Report
- Upside: Top Line Offensive Forward
- Floor: 2nd Line Offensive Forward
- Comparable: Dylan Larkin
This is my scouting report on Victoria Grizzlies center Alex Newhook. After being perhaps a little bit overhyped at the start of the season, I think the expectations for Newhook have levelled off and maybe even taken an unwarranted dip. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Newhook but all I’ve ever seen from him is total and complete effort and I will always appreciate players like that.
That’s certainly not all I’ve seen from him though. He is a terrific skater with a strong stride. Newhook is a creative player with high offensive awareness that allows him to make nifty passes to teammates for scoring opportunities. He has a high skill level and plays a smart two-way game. He’s a versatile player able to play as a winger or a center. He’s got a great set of hands and can really dangle.
Not to be forgotten is the fact that he can really shoot the puck. Newhook has a really good accurate, hard wrister that can surprise goaltenders with a quick release. He has a goal-scorers’ touch and has great hands in close. He’s good on the forecheck and competes hard every shift.
One of the aspects of his game that I was really impressed with is his exceptional acceleration. He can surprise defenders unfamiliar with his skillset and blow past them with a few quick bursts. I also really love the fact that he seems to mesh and form chemistry quickly with whomever he plays with. He’s a player that is easy to play with as he adapts to his linemates thanks to his smarts and playing style. To me that is a sign of a player with a very high hockey IQ.
I thought he was Canada’s best player at the U18 tournament where he played mostly left wing with Krebs and Cozens. I thought he stood out in a good way and was Canada’s offensive catalyst throughout that tournament.
When you consider the talent level and the skillset and you combine that with the fact that he’ll never cheat you on effort, adding a player like Newhook on draft day is a great move for any team.
The player that Alex Newhook reminds me of most is Dylan Larkin. That’s because they are both great skaters with excellent acceleration. They are both highly talented, great shooters and always seem to put in the work and an even effort every single shift. I think that whoever selects Newhook would be thrilled if he turned into a player like Larkin.
