Elias Pettersson Scouting Report:

This is my scouting report for Timra center Elias Pettersson. The most surprising thing I noticed while watching him play is how much of a tireless worker he is out there. He gives ‘even’ performances every shift throughout the game, at least the ones I saw. His work ethic is phenomenal and it doesn’t hurt that he’s got a pretty great skillset to go with that as well.

Great anticipation, creativity and a high hockey IQ are qualities that best describe him although I found he sometimes seems to fly under the radar a bit and then comes out of nowhere and makes a great play. This is not a player with a tremendous ‘presence’ on the ice but he’s a slick and clever player who works hard in all areas and gives a noticeable strong second effort. He is listed at 6’2″ and 165lbs and he’s probably going to need to eventually fill-out a bit and get to a playing weight close to 185-190 lbs to truly be effective.

My comparable for him is Alex Wennberg and I think that is an appropriate comparable. Wennberg is a player that I thought was overrated back in the 2013 draft and he has proven me wrong. Maybe it was just the games that I saw but I didn’t see what made him so special. I didn’t really see any star potential and my expectations were probably a little too high to begin with. I think the same holds true with a player like Pettersson. To me, he doesn’t flag as a guy with ‘star potential’ but he could turn out to be a really solid Top-6 forward. If he puts on weight and gains confidence, he could be much more than that. When you consider the compete + the skillset + the potential, I think he’s a lock to be a Top 10 pick.
